What is retina?

The retina is the inner posterior lining of the eye. The vitreous is a jelly-like substance that fills the middle eye. When a patient is has retina or vitreous issues, they may notice blurred or distorted vision, decreased vision, floaters and flashes,  or they may have no symptoms. It’s important to consult with a retina specialist who can provide optimal care for these conditions.

Routine Comprehensive Eye Exam

It’s important to get a retina exam yearly. It is usually completed as a part of your routine eye exam and doesn’t require a special appointment. However, some patients need to be screened for retinal disease more often:

  • You need a regular eye exam if you have diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy can lead to sudden blindness if not treated immediately. Laser surgery and other interventions can preserve your eyesight once diabetic retinopathy has begun.
  • Patients with glaucoma need to have regular retinal screenings, at least two eye exams per year. High eye pressure can damage the optic nerve without causing pain.
  • Macular degeneration progresses undetected for years until sight is eventually gone. Our team can help detect the problem and determine the best treatment plan.
